Hospice with Heart Patient Celebrates 87th Birthday as a Casino VIP
on Wednesday, February 10, 2016
87-year-old Glenwood resident Melva Sellers has a longstanding tradition of celebrating her birthday with her daughters at Horseshoe Casino and nothing – not even a terminal diagnosis – was going to stop her from enjoying her beloved penny slot machines and buffet bread pudding.
With some help from her hospice provider, Hospice with Heart*, Sellers “broke out” of her room at the organization’s hospice house for a few hours last Saturday for a trip to the casino with her family. The hospice organization made arrangements for the celebration and covered transportation costs, which were discounted by a local transportation company. Horseshoe Casino gave Sellers VIP guest treatment, complete with staff greeting her by holding signs reading, “Happy Birthday” and “Good Luck, Melva,” free slot play, a complimentary jacket and a buffet lunch for her and her family.
“It was a really good birthday — my favorite,” Sellers said. “I had a wonderful time.”
Hospice with Heart, a program of HCI Hospice Care Services, is dedicated to treating the whole patient at end-of-life. That approach goes far beyond treating pain and the other physical symptoms individuals experience. It means identifying the things that add quality to life and bring joy to the patient and those who love them. This wish, like dozens of others provided each year to families in need, was made possible by generous community donations through HCI Hospice Care Services’ Quality of Life program.
*Please note: HCI Foundation does not provide funds for gambling. The non-profit organization helped to make arrangements for the day and to cover transportation costs for the birthday wish.
